How much does a website cost

To illustrate of the costs of a website - it is similar to setting up a shop in a mall.

The owner has to register a name, so no one else can trade under that name.

He then has to rent shop space in the mall. The floor space and location (amount of traffic) will determine the cost of rent. Then he has to furnish the shop with shop fittings and furniture, stock it and have all his signwriting and stationery designed. Lastly, he needs to add his information to the telephone directory and mall directory and start advertising.

A website has to have a domain name (www.website.co.za). This is registered and renewed annually. Then the website needs to rent some disk space on a computer that is attached to the internet. This is called web hosting. Just as the shop’s rent is influenced by floor space, so is hosting’s cost influenced by size and amount of traffic. Lastly, a website needs a design.
